In October of last year I was unlucky enough to suffer my second miscarriage, losing a baby boy at sixteen weeks of pregnancy. However, as a long standing member of Natural Mamas forums, I was lucky enough to be enveloped in support throughout the process. Pregnancy loss is of course very common, especially in the early stages, and everyone will deal with their loss differently, but I found that what was traditionally a hidden pain was helped enormously by that support, having someone knowledgeable available to answer my questions, and people to talk to and share experiences. As I came to terms with the loss of my ‘blue bird’ I was lucky enough to receive several tokens of remembrance from talented friends, meaning our little bird will always be remembered and represented in our home, abstractly yet with meaning to those who understand the items of significance.
Recently I was contacted by yet another talented forum member, Hannah – a very creative lady who works with lino prints, amongst many other crafts. She told me she had created a very special print, titled ‘Flock’ and together we decided we would like to do something worthwhile – for my blue bird, and for everyone who has suffered a miscarriage, to help give them the support that I was so lucky to have. In Hannah’s words; ‘Flock’ is inspired by the many Natural Mamas who have lost babies, and by one mama’s story in particular. When reading posts related to loss, I’ve noticed that women often talk about their babies as flying, either as birds or angels. Because of this I have always imagined them flying together, gaining support and friendship from each other wherever they are, just as we do on the forum.’
And so we have set up this Just Giving Page dedicated to raising money for The Miscarriage Association, who run a help line and support groups across the country for parents coming to terms with the physical process and emotional effects of miscarriage and pregnancy loss – birds of a feather must flock together.
There is no suggested donation amount. Should you wish to contribute you may do so through the Just Giving page direct to the charity, as much or as little as you can spare. As the page runs, Hannah will be busy creating works of art from her lino print. From an exclusive print run of just ten copies, she will donate five as gifts to people making a donation through the page, at random. The five people who receive this beautiful and meaningful print can keep their own piece of friendship and support, in art form, forever, using it as their very own token if they have suffered loss, or merely to remind themselves that they are never alone. And together we can raise money to support those who feel alone, whose little birds are flying high.
A huge thank you Hannah for making this possible, and for her time and work on the project. Please note that if you are lucky enough to receive a copy of the print it may take up to 14 working days to be finished and posted. Unfortunately we cannot gift the prints to those who choose to donate anonymously.
